Our River Walk Royalty

mud queen trophyIt All Started In The Mud

Once upon a time, the crown jewel of San Antonio, known as the River Walk, had its’ magical water drained annually for one week. The citizens and visitors became sad their beautiful river contained only mud. To bring joy to the good people, the citizens pledged nickels to elect a Mud King and Queen who reigned over the week of mud. The money provided mirth and merriment along the River Walk once refilled. All rejoiced! Through the years, the river required less draining and the tradition of Mud King and Queen sadly ended in 1986.

About Royalty

Since 1987, River Walk Royalty has been serving for a full calendar year. Throughout their reign, they serve as ambassadors for the San Antonio River Walk. Each year, candidates work to raise money for local hospitality and architectural preservation scholarships.  Nominees are announced in June and have eight months to fundraise for their “position” on the royal court. Titles are awarded based on the amount of money raised for King and Queen, Prince and Princess, Duke and Duchess, Count and Countess. A Royal Coronation ceremony occurs at the Mardi Gras Festival, kicking off the Mardi Gras Parade on the river.

Royalty makes appearances not only at River Walk events but at various occasions throughout the city. Royalty campaigning is a large fundraising activity. Being a River Walk Royal is not only a great honor but also a responsibility. One must perfect the royal wave, ride in countless parades, and look great wearing a crown.
