Dyeing the river green from a boat

Due to the City of San Antonio ban on crowds of more than 500, The San Antonio River Walk Association has complied by canceling the two St. Patrick’s Day events – the dyeing of the river green and The St. Patrick’s Day Festival & Parade. We will, however, continue with the St. Patrick’s Day Artisan Show presented by Hiltons of San Antonio. The artisan show does not attract a large static crowd; instead, it is a flow of people.

Each year since 1968 the River Walk is magically transformed into the River Shannon as the eco-friendly green dye is swirled into the water.

Mad Dogs is the sponsor of this event, and the starting point each day.

This is an exciting time to visit the River Walk and watch the amazing transformation. A bagpiper plays on the barge (14th and 15th only, recorded music on 17th) as the river is transformed. FREE viewing is available along the entire 2 1/2 mile downtown portion of the River Walk. The color is instantly apparent and intensifies with water movement by the boats. Additional applications create an even richer color. It’s a great time to sit outdoors on a patio and enjoy a pint, or two…

If you can’t make it to the River Walk, catch the Facebook LIVE broadcast each day: facebook.com/TheSanAntonioRiverWalkOfficial. Last year over 50,000 people watched!
