Welcome to the restoration of the 1929 Alamo National Bank Building into the Drury Plaza Hotel
In 1929, a construction began on the $2,500,000 skyscraper, after the Alamo National Bank had outgrown its first bank building. San Antonio was at the point, the largest and richest city in Texas.
Using Art Deco ornamentation and the principles of the Beaux-Arts, the architecture firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White designed the 24-story skyscraper and incorporated the Texas Stars and southwest patterns. This architectural masterpiece has been a landmark in the San Antonio skyline since its construction.

Pearl is a neighborhood and like all great neighborhoods it has a rich history that is added to and upheld by the many people who have ties to the place - the buildings, the river, the brewery since it was founded in 1881. Pearl is also a place where we like to get together – to share meals, to learn, to work, to live. With 324 apartments, fifteen restaurants and cafes, thirteen retailers and eighteen resident businesses as well as a twice weekly Farmers Market, this neighborhood is always full of life and activity.
We invite friends, neighbors and visitors to join us in our plaza, in our park spaces and at our year round series of music, food and cultural events and enjoy our position on the beautiful Northern reach of the San Antonio River steps from the San Antonio Museum of Art, The Do Seum and Brackenridge Park.
The McNay Art Museum, located in San Antonio and named for founder Marion Koogler McNay, is the first museum of modern art in Texas.
Becoming the McNay
Ohio-born heiress Marion Koogler first visited San Antonio in 1918, shortly after her marriage to Sergeant Don Denton McNay, who was called to active duty in Laredo, Texas. Later that year Don McNay died from the Spanish flu. In 1926, Marion moved to San Antonio, where she met and married prominent ophthalmologist Donald T. Atkinson. The following year, she purchased her first modern oil painting, Diego Rivera’s Delfina Flores, and the Atkinsons commissioned San Antonio architects Atlee and Robert Ayres to design a 24-room Spanish Colonial-Revival house that would one day become the core of the McNay Art Museum. Marion continued to collect 19th- and 20th-century European and American paintings, as well as Southwest art from New Mexico. When her marriage to Atkinson ended in 1936, she returned to using her first husband’s name. At her death in 1950, Marion left her collection of more than 700 works of art, along with the house, the surrounding 23 acres, and an endowment to establish the first museum of modern art in Texas. In 1954 the McNay opened its doors to the public. The Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, built in 2008 and designed by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier, added 45,000 square feet to the museum and created gallery space for major exhibitions, a sculpture gallery and garden, a lecture hall, and classrooms for the museum’s many educational programs.
The McNay Today
Since Marion McNay’s original bequest in 1950, the museum’s collection has expanded to over 22,000 works including:
Medieval and Renaissance art
19th- through 21st- century European and American paintings, sculptures, and photographs
One of the finest collections of prints and drawings in the Southwest
The exceptional Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts
Jeanne and Irving Mathews Collection of Art Glass
Art of New Mexico
The Majestic Theatre and Charline McCombs Theatre are San Antonio’s premier performing arts facilities featuring Broadway shows, concerts, comedians and other live events.
The Historic Majestic Theatre is located at 224 E. Houston Street in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Texas. Built in 1929 by John Eberson for Interstate Theatres, the Majestic was intended to be the most modern building in South Texas and was the first in the state to be totally air-conditioned. The Majestic remains one of the finest examples of atmospheric theatres ever built, receiving National Historic Landmark status in 1993. Purchased in 1988 by the City of San Antonio, the theatre was renovated in 1989 at a cost of $15 million, and shortly after, in 1996, the stage was expanded, allowing the theatre to accommodate major Broadway musicals. Since 1989, the Majestic has hosted over 5 million patrons, all at no cost to taxpayers. Address: 224 E. Houston St, San Antonio, Texas 78205
The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre was built in 1913 on the site of the former Rische's Opera House in downtown San Antonio, Texas. Designed in the style of a European palazzo by architects Mauran, Russell & Crow of St. Louis, the Empire operated as a vaudeville house and then a motion picture theatre. The Empire's grandeur was prematurely concealed by inappropriate repairs to extensive flood damage in 1921. After a long, slow decline, the vaudeville house, turned B-run movie theatre, closed its doors in 1978. Address: 226 N. St. Mary’s Street, San Antonio, Texas 78205

Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. The Spanish Governor’s Palace, a National Historic Landmark, is the last visible trace of the Presidio San Antonio de Bexar and the only remaining example in Texas of an aristocratic 18th-century Spanish Colonial town house. Constructed in 1749, it was used as the headquarters and residence of the captain of the San Antonio De Bexar Presidio and given the name the "Spanish Governor's Palace.” The building is a long one-story, U-shaped stone structure covered in stucco that surrounds a traditional Spanish patio and courtyard. Since 1931, it has operated as a Museum of Spanish Colonial History.
The Spanish Governor's Palace is located at 105 Plaza de Armas in San Antonio, Texas 78205. It is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The fees are $5 adult regular admission, $3 for seniors and military, and $3 for children ages 7 through 13. Children under the age of seven are free.
